American Webster (Crystal 717). Works by Libby Larsen, Robert Sirota, Anthony Brandt, Richard Toensing, and Paul Schoenfeld performed by the Webster Trio (Michael Webster, clarinet; Robert Moeling, piano).

Music of Martin Amlin for flute, clarinet and piano (Albany Records/Troy 1567). Composer Martin Amlin is pianist for all works. Four  involve flute: Intrada for two flutes and piano (with Fenwick Smith), Morceau de Concours for flute and piano, Sonata No. 2 for flute and piano, and Trio Sonatina for flute, clarinet and piano (with Michael Webster).

Performances herein are stellar and make a wonderful case for the music; having the composer at the piano keyboard, of course, lends an authenticity to the entire production.  — David DeBoor Canfield

The flute is treated in a virtuoso fashion, but the overriding feel is of reflection, not display, and once more Leone Buyse is a most expressive voice (Morceau de Concours).The close rapport enjoyed by Buyse and Amlin is once again a key factor in the performance’s success (Sonata No. 2 for flute and piano).  –Colin Clarke

Three pieces involve flute: Sweet Rice Pie, Our Names, and Returnings (a trio with cellist Bion Tsang and percussionist Robert Schulz). Among the other artist collaborators on this CD are Cho-Liang Lin, violin; Norman Fischer, cello; Jeanne Kierman Fischer, piano; Michael Webster, clarinet; and Timothy Jones, baritone.

This is the second installment in Leone Buyse’s Dedicated to Barrere series. I absolutely gushed about the first (Jan/Feb 2007). This is just as fabulous. As I said in the previous review, simply put, this is how the flute should sound. Buyse and Amlin clearly have a natural musical connection; their balance and ensemble are flawless. There are 11 works here–far too many to describe in detail–but all have a connection to Georges Barrere, some well known (Griffes), others a pleasant surprise (Goldman, Kriens). Program notes by Nancy Toff are scholarly and readable. Another must-buy from great artists.
